CASL and Run Waterloo

Canada’s new anti-spam legislation (CASL) comes into effect on July 1, 2014.

Your email inbox has been flooded with CASL-related emails this past week. Why didn’t you receive one from RunWaterloo?

EmailSimply put, if you’re on our distribution list, you have provided at least one of the two types of consent. First, express consent, by either by authorizing periodic emails through a voluntary waiver or through a widget with two-step email verification. As express consent is not time-limited, and we follow all other aspects of the new legislation (identification, unsubscribe link), CASL won’t have any affect on our monthly newsletter for individuals under express consent. Second, implied consent, by making a purchase from RunWaterloo and providing your email address. Implied consent is limited to two years, and your email will be phased out of email distribution appropriately. Both implied and express consent are sufficient for email distribution.

As well as email privacy, we also take email content very seriously. As a subscriber to the RunWaterloo mailing list, you receive no more than 15 newsletters per year: 12 monthly updates plus a very limited number of special announcements. We try to keep all emails as high-value as possible, with local running news, stories, and tips from our blog team. [If you are also a subscriber to any individual race as well, you will receive a handful of pre- and post-race emails (important updates, race recap and photos, registration updates).]

Of course, if you want out, it’s easy – the link is at the bottom of every newsletter we send. We love having you on our mailing list, but email software makes your option to unsubscribe easy and foolproof. If you have any questions or concerns, please let us know! We take your opinions and preferences seriously.

Thanks for reading. We sincerely hope to be seeing cleaner inboxes in the future!
