That being said, there are a lot of obvious differences between the sports and events. At walking races, there are judges to monitor participant technique. Walkers maintain a much shorter stride length for long periods of time. Internationally, racewalking didn’t enter Olympic competition in it’s current form until 1932.

Results

What we really want to know is, how do the times compare? Check these out:
KW Walking Classic Records
5KM: Linda Wilson, 28:59, 2011
10KM: Lee Scott, 1:01.36, 2009
Half: Jane Cooper-Kelly, 2:15.21, 2010

You can look at those in one of two ways. Compare those to the Waterloo 10KM Classic record set by Paul Lockhart in 1985: 29:46, or Johana Kariankei’s 2012 winning time of 32:02! On the other hand, in 2012, the median time for the 10KM run was 56:11. Lee Scott’s record 10 KM walk is faster than 31% of 10KM run finishers!
