It’s a new year and I’m that glad Run Waterloo has a full calendar for 2023!
If I had to rate my running over the past few years, it’s been … I have a lot of excuses. But I’m excited to get back on track this year and I’ve circled a bunch of races on the calendar. And while I haven’t launched a lot of free race entry contests over the past few years, we’re back on track for a great year of giveaways to keep you motivated too.
First up is the Re-Fridgee-Eighter on February 12. I’m giving away two entries through my My Next KW Race contest. It’s really simple, here are the rules:
- Answer the question below in these blog comments, on Facebook, or on Instagram for one entry (reply to @RunWaterloo or @MyNextKwHome, or tag both in comment/post).
- Respond to any other entry for an additional entry, maximum of 2 total entries per person.
- Enter the contest by January 17 at 6pm; two winners will be announced January 17 at 8pm. Two separate individuals will be chosen for the two free entries, which include race fee and t-shirt.
- If you haven’t registered yet, winner will receive a code for a free entry; if you have registered, your entry will be refunded (less processing fee), credited to a future race, or available for you to use for a friend.
The question for this month is:
How do you stay motivated to run in the winter?
I’d love to start a conversation about the tools and tricks people use, what is currently working (and not working!), and encouragement for people who are looking for motivation to get 2023 off to an active start!

Hi Mike and Laura
Thank you for your contest and an a chance to have a free entry to the race π
How do I stay motivated to run in the winter? Since I started running 5 years ago, my health has improved a lot, stress disappeared and I feel I am in the prime of my life even as old as I am, therefore I continue with this winning combination summer or winter. My winter is divided in 2 parts; first part is the recovery which lasts from the last race until the new year where my workouts are toned down; the second part is ramping up the miles and the intensity to be ready for the race season.
Best regards,
Thanks Marius! That are great reasons to stay motivated! Looking at it in 2 parts is also a great idea to make the winter feel just a tiny bit shorter as well!
Finding a group to run with is the number one motivator for me. Knowing that there will be someone else there to brave the cold or the snow makes it so much more motivating to pace up the shoes and head out for a run.
Thanks Michael! That was the #1 motivator for me. We signed up for a 10km in January, join H+P and it was the only way we were ready for race day!
Hey! I’d love a chance to win a free race entry!
I’ve only been running for a couple of years off and on (a couch-to-5k graduate and finished my first 5k and then first 10k in 2022) and part of the reason I kept “quitting” was because I would stop running in the winter and lose my progress. This winter I’ve been running on a treadmill (I know it’s not quite the same) and I’m hopeful that I’ll maintain my current fitness so that I can resume running outdoors at about the same level as I had been at in the fall. We will see! But it’s working for me, for now. And I’ve watched a lot of The Crown too, so that’s a bonus π
Staying motivated throughout the winter can be tough! But being able to watch some of your favourite shows while doing it seems like an added bonus π
Iβm definitely a fair weather runner! To stay motivated in the winter, I rely on others to get me out the door. Joining a group run or meeting up with a friend ensures I donβt skip out on a workout. This extends to my dog who loves to run with me and gives me reason to head out even when the weather is bad.
Thanks Amy! Friends (human and dog) are great motivators! Thanks for sharing!
