With the changing of the seasons it is only a matter of time before cold and flu season is in full swing! As runners there is nothing worse than having to take time off training to nurse a cold or rest after getting the flu. Having the proper gear, giving your body enough rest in between training days, and proper nutrition are all great ways to help prevent you from getting sick.
There are a few things you can do in your home to help avoid those pesky colds…
- Sanitize surfaces frequently. Cold and flu spreads easily but the more you wipe down common surfaces the harder it is for those germs to spread.
- Use a humidifier. Cold, dryair pulls moisture from your mouth and nose, leaving your nasal passages dried out and your throat dry.
- Consider copper surfaces.Apparently copper and copper alloys (brass, bronze) have inherent antimicrobial properties that make them capable of reducing the spread of infection.
How do you avoid the cold or flu? What is your go to cold or flu remedy?

I get my flu shot! As someone with a lot of elderly family members I think it’s important to do what I can to keep myself healthy to help protect them!! This combined with lots of sleep, a healthy diet and hand washing before eating has kept me flu free since I was 7 and at an average of one cold per year. (I won’t say how long it was since I was 7, but it’s been long enough 😉 )
Flu free since 7 is amazing!!
With multiple school aged kids, I find its almost impossible to avoid the cold and flu this time of year. I like the natural treatments – Ginger, lemon, garlic and honey to name a few.
Stay healthy!
Thanks Michael! Last year our little one brought a lot home from daycare. Hoping this year we can stay healthy.
I wash hands, take vitamins, anti-oxidents and do indoor workouts.
Thanks Melissa!! Working with kids all day it is tough to stay healthy sometimes but looks like you have some good options to help!
I enjoy a hot sauna most day after a relaxing swim. This keeps my muscles warm and relaxed for my runs and also sweats out all the toxins and germs I could have picked up during the day.
Thanks Paul! I will have to try that!
I always get my flu shot because I have 2 kids in school, my wife is a teacher, and I work shift work. My chances of infection are through the roof. I also try to drink ginger tea with lots of lemon and honey if I start to feel a tickle in my throat.
Lots of hand washing, and eat lots of vegetables to get good vitamins.
