The Cherangany Region is ideally suited for dairy, with 1 metre of rich topsoil, abundant rainfall, and a moderate climate. There is incredible potential for growth, and the KKFC is exploring various training programs and capital investments to take advantage of this potential.
In June 2014, two board members of the KKFC visited the Cherangany Region. On their trip, Karen and Blair visited 20 farms and 2 farmer co-ops. Some common observations:
– lack of feed for calves and cattle
– too much grazing on overused pasture
– limited storage
– little or no silage
The key focus of the KKFC is empowerment. The foundation is currently working on a strategy to help Cherangany create structures such as co-op membership, Kenyan ownership and partnership, through:
– Providing access to capital for farmers
– Purchasing feed and supplies
– AI and cattle purchases
The KKFC fundraises in Canada to meet these goals through events like the Harvest Half, campaigns like the Grandma and Gogo book and general donations.
We will provide more updates as they are available. Please visit the Kenyan Kids Foundation Canada website for more information.
