You might have seen a new event on the Run Waterloo calendar this June 7. You know we don’t put events on our calendar unless they are fit to run, but there is so much more to know about this special event. This is why we caught up with Elizabeth Landman, Director at Brain Injury Association Waterloo-Wellington (BIAWW) and Lakeside Laps Committee Chair.
RW. What should people know about BIAWW and the work you do?
EL. At the Brain Injury Association of Waterloo-Wellington, we’re all about supporting individuals and families affected by brain injuries. Whether it’s through education, advocacy, or community programs, we’re here to provide essential resources and build a network of support. From peer mentorship and support groups to workshops and outreach, we’re working to make life a little easier for survivors and their caregivers.
RW. What’s the story behind this event?
EL. This event has come a long way! It started back in 2013 as Heels n’ Wheels, a fun 5K run where survivors, families, and community members could come together for inclusive physical activity, and continued until 2015. After a few years, it evolved into Walk, Run & Roll in 2021—operating virtually during the pandemic. Now, we’re bringing back the in-person energy with Lakeside Laps for Brain Injury Awareness! We wanted a fresh start that reaches even more people, expands our impact, and gets the whole community involved in raising awareness for brain injury survivors.

RW. Why are we hosting this event in June?
EL. June is Brain Injury Awareness Month in Canada, making it the perfect time to come together, get active, and raise awareness. Brain injuries affect millions of people, but they often go unnoticed. By running, walking, or rolling in this event, you’re helping to shed light on brain injury prevention, support, and rehabilitation—while making a real difference in the lives of survivors.
RW. Why is Run Waterloo a great fit for this event?
EL. Run Waterloo is amazing at bringing people together through well-organized, community-driven races. They know how to create events that are welcoming, fun, and accessible to all, which aligns perfectly with our mission at BIAWW. With their deep roots in the Waterloo region and experience in race logistics, they help us take Lakeside Laps to the next level—ensuring a smooth, enjoyable event for everyone while amplifying our impact!
