Spring updates to Run Waterloo’s COVID-19 policy

Note: this went to effect on April 20, 2022.

There are very few current restrictions on outdoor events, which is great. We believe outdoor racing to be a safe and healthy activity, and we are easing back into live races throughout 2022. We already have our third event of the season coming up on April 16, with more scheduled for May 14 and June 19.

As we have followed the science and the guidelines for 2 years, we have continued to iterate and update our COVID-19 policy. We have two important updates for spring 2022:

1. We are not changing our event cancellation guarantee. If a race is cancelled due to COVID-19, all entries will be deferred at no cost to future events.

2. We are eliminating our free self-assessment deferral. Currently, the participant waiver for all races guarantees a free, no-questions-asked deferral to 2023 based on a self-assessment. We saw this to be an essential (if temporary) measure during the immediate resumption of races and the crush of the Omicron wave. This has been an expensive and risky offer, and it is totally unstandard in our industry. As of April 19th at midnight, all waivers will be changed to reflect a policy of $15 deferral charges. As of that date, new registrants will still be expected to put public health first, and also assume the risk with signup. All participants who had previously registered will continue to be protected by the waiver at the time they signed up.

Thank you for your belief in us, your understanding, and your participation.

Makes sense. I think the running community will still properly self assess even if they have to pay a dereral fee. Regardless the outside nature of the event reduces the risk should a few people with symptoms end up at the race.
